The Story of Stuff

Here's an ecological lesson for us all. Annie Leonard takes us on a journey that examines the global impacts of the "stuff" we consume; from extraction through sale, use and disposal, and the cultural morays that cause us to consume in the first place. A very well made educational video that should be watched by everyone.

That's a sobering little video. I found the distinction between "Planned" and "Perceived" Obsolescence particularly interesting. And actually, a lot of that goes back to the ideas of Thorsten Veeblen, who promoted these concepts as a way to help America out of the Great Depression.

Twenty years ago when you went to the Thrift Stores, they were filled with great stuff, much of which had lived a good life and was ready to live another one. Today, you go into those same Thrift Stores, and they are filled with cheaply made (and poorly designed) CRAP that is being bought by (mostly) poor people who can only consume "one-off".

Unfortunately, the whole idea of "going Green" is also being turned into a huge consumer moment, which makes one despair of people ever really facing reality.
