Photographer Jan Kempenaers has documented Communist monuments in Yugoslavia. They were built in memory of various WWII battle. Strange forms in desolate locations. Very interesting stuff!

The art of Sebastien Wierinick

Everything, Like, Such As has some images of the installation work of Belgian designer Sebastien Wierinick. Using polyethylene tubes, he creates space, seating, lighting, and environmental interest. I'd like to see some of this as public seating in outdoor locations.

Perpetuum Jazzile

This choir creates the sounds of a thunderstorm. Unfortunately, it's as a prelude to a dumb TOTO song, but still, it's worth watching. It starts out almost silent, but the sound picks up. Make sure your volume is up!

Robert J. Lang is a scientist, and artist who is today considered to be the foremost authority on origami. Through advanced geometries and tessellations, Lang has advanced the art of paper folding to an incredible degree.

Monumental Instructions for the Post-Apocalypse

Wired.com has a fascinating article about the Georgia Guidestones. Thought of as America's Stonehenge, the enormous stones provide guiding instructions for the recreation of civilization (if needed) including advice like "Prize Truth, Beauty, Love, Seeking Harmony With the Infinate". There's lots to this story. It's an interesting read.

Car Hood Tables

Trends Now has images of the work of Joel Hester who gives old car hoods a second life by turing them into tables and desks. The gorgeous patinas simply cannot be faked!

Carousel

This is a really interesting image/film. The entire thing is a moment frozen in time of a battle between cops and masked criminals. As you move through the scene, a story is told, and even has a twist at the end with the first image matching the last. Worth watching!

Field Guide to Freeway Interchanges

The Infrastructurist has images and descriptions of various types of freeway interchanges from the 'cloverleaf' (shown above) to the 'spooey'. Interesting aerial photography too.

The Grand Staircase

The Trendy Girl has photos of this incredible architectural intervention in the Abbey of Corbigny by the Dutch architecture firm Krijn de Koning. All I can say is wow wow WOW!

Suitcase Vanity Cabinet

Like Cool has a short post depicting this wonderful and simple idea. A little creative infill and lighting makes a vintage suitcase into a delightful cabinet, or display case. The maker of the one shown sells them on Etsy, but it could easily be a DIY project. 

Antelope Canyon

Environmental Graffiti has stunning images of the sandstone rock formations of Antelope Canyon in Arizona. The contours of the gorges are created by flash floods and wind erosion. Colors, textures, and form are unsurpassed.

Cassini's Continued Mission

Boston.com's Big Picture has beautiful images from the Cassini Spacecraft. The craft's mission ended last year, but it continues to operate and is still returning amazing images of Saturn and it's moons.

Bridge Tea House

Trends Now has a few images of the Bridge Tea House in China. Designed by architect Fernando Romero, the beautiful structure is both building and art. The spaces created are quite lovely.

The art of Tom Deininger

Tom Deininger resides in Rhode Island and creates wonderful paintings by assembling and gluing found junk onto canvases. His paintings, like the self portrait shown, are filled with vitality and humor.

Discover Magazine has an incredible photo of the Sun with the Space Shuttle and the Hubble Telescope in the foreground. 

Pixel City

This is a really interesting project by Shamus Young in which he uses computer algorithms to generate a city scape. Each of the buildings is designed by the computer program. The final effect is amazing.

The art of Ginou Choueir

Just Cool Design has a short article about Lebanese artist Ginou Choueir who paints faces on potatoes. He has painted sacks of them and each one is different, as he relies on the shape and surface of each potato to influence the personality of the face. Weird, but amazing work!

The Museum of Unworkable Devices

The Museum of Unworkable Devices celebrates the futile efforts of eccentric inventors who devise ingenious machines that don't work. Perpetual motion is the main focus, however there are some other concepts that could never work. The site is a great source for understanding physics.

St. Henry's Ecumenical Art Chapel

This beautiful chapel, designed by Sanaksenaho Architects, is located in Turku, Finland. The design is influenced by the shapes of fish and boats, both seen as religious symbols. I love the simplicity and sparseness of the materials and use of light.

Kate MccGwire is a London based artist who works with organic materials and patterns. She seeks to emulate the beauty of nature while at the same time, evoking surrealistic fear in the juxtaposition of her materials. Some really beautiful work.
